Supplements May Be Doing More Harm

May 30th, 2008 by admin

A popular question that comes up among my clients especially athletes is about nutrition. They always want to know what they should eat and what supplements I recommend. This is when I cringe, when I hear them talk about supplements. In a nutshell supplements just make expensive urine. A good diet is all you need, and I don’t care what other studies say. Humans have lived long before supplements came out, and they were living quite fine. The absence of synthetic supplements from your diet won’t kill you; in a matter of fat it may promote your health more.

Most of the time synthetic supplements aren’t absorbed well in the body, and the rest is excreted. I’m a firm believer that it’s impossible to get a substitute for a good healthy diet through a bottle. Skip supplements all you need to do is to eat a diet that is rich in nutrients, phytonutrients, micronutrinets, enzymes, and omega 3 fatty acids and you should be just fine. Don’t forget to drink adequate amounts of pure water and get your adequate amount of sunlight (vitamin D).

By the way, the government doesn’t do a good job in regulating supplements and it could be literally anything within a capsule. Some supplement companies don’t even list their ingredients on their bottle. Seems a little skeptical to me, I would stick to natural foods.

Foods That Should Be Put on Death Row

May 7th, 2008 by admin

French fries

Greasy, crispy, crunchy, crinkly, crackling, good tasting and flat out terrible to your health. Potatoes are not the ideal vegetable in its natural form because it is a bit on the starchy side. However it is even more detrimental to your health when it is turned into French fries. It is processed and refined which means it loses a huge chunk of their nutritional value. To make it even worse they are fried in heart clogging vegetables oils commonly known as trans fat. The higher the temperatures the fries are fried in the more carcinogens or cancer causing agents they will contain.

Doughnuts

Do not start your day off wrong by eating a doughnut or two. Doughnuts are fattening, contain high amounts of sugars, and are fried. They contain a lot of calories but will not fill you up because they don’t contain many nutrients.

Soda

Sodas are very sugary and corrode the teeth because they dissolve into them gradually weakening them over time. They contain a load of calories, are carbonated, contain processed caffeine, contain artificial colors, and raise the insulin levels rapidly (blood sugar levels). I would highly recommend kicking the habit of stopping by the nearest store or vending machine to pick up a pop.

Frozen Entrees

Frozen entrees are highly processed. In order to preserve them they usually contain trans fat. The chicken is sometimes breaded and fried. The ratio balance of nutrients in them is way off; they usually give abundant meat with a tiny bit of vegetables. The correct proportion should be a lot of vegetables with a little piece of meat. They usually contain some type of sugary dessert and usually recommend the use of a microwave which is extremely dangerous to your health.

Canned Goods

Canned fruits or vegetables are nothing close to the real thing. Imagine taking the healthiest food. Now for a twist, imagine taking it and adding loads of sugars and salt to it, stripped it of its nutrients in order to preserve it and can it with chemical agents inside them and placing it on the local supermarkets. That is what basically happens in a nutshell to can foods. There was never a problem with high blood-pressure in the early days of America. In a matter of fact America was actually known as the healthiest country in the early 1900s. However with the invention of all of these contemporary preserving methods the health of America has rapidly declined.

Candy

Try to avoid candy as much as possible. If you have to have some I would highly recommend old fashioned or homemade candy, which is not good for you but beats the processed junk that are contaminating the supermarkets today. Candy bars are sugary, contain abundant calories, processed chocolate, and trans fat. You know when there is something wrong with a food item when it can stay on the supermarket for a excessively long time. Hard candies corrode the teeth and contain high fructose corn syrup which spikes up the insulin levels.

Chips

I’m not sure which ones are worse, potato chips, or French fries? They both are cheap, greasy, and heart clogging. However when eating a big bag of potato chops you can sort of chow down until you realized that the whole bag is gone, and you can eat them while they are cold.

Bitter Sweet

April 23rd, 2008 by admin

Imagine a sweetener with zero calories, and no harmful effects. If that was the case than everyone could consume all the artificial sugar they want without gaining weight right? Than that would mean that everyone would be slim right? Unfortunately this is not the case. Sometimes you have to listen to the old saying which goes like this. “If something sounds too good to be true it usually is.” Researchers from the Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center in Italy has linked aspartame the main ingredient in Equal and NutraSweet to numerous of health disorders in laboratory rats such as lymphomas, tumors, and leukemia.

The Study

In the study rats were compared by feeding them different dosages of aspartame all the way until their death. They started feeding the rats aspartame starting when they were eight weeks old. The study concluded that the more aspartame a rat was feed, the more malignant cancers they died with.

Reflections

I have never been an advocate of artificial sweeteners since I had a bad experience with one. Several years ago I purchased a bag of candy that contained sucralose, the artificial sweetener that is used in Splenda which is 600 times sweeter than table sugar. It was on sale so I decided to purchase some. After I ate a couple my stomach was acting funny, and I thought it was coming from something else. I continue eating, and the pain kept growing stronger. I was confused; I thought that the last place it was coming from was from the “sugar free” candy. I mean after all the FDA approved of it and there were countless of clinical trials that said that it was safe for human consumption, even safe for babies. My curiosity was bugging me, and I decided to do research about it myself. What I discovered were some horrifying secrets about all artificial sweeteners including Equal and Splenda. The FDA approved countless of harmful substances in the past such as ephedrine for one. Also, a lot of clinical trials can be rigged, and the effects of artificial sweeteners can catch up to an individual down the road. A lot of people never report the effects they feel from artificial sweeteners because they think that it may be coming from a different source. Stop ignoring, and stop drinking diet sodas, throw it all out of your house, it’s not safe for you or your family.
